See the 16th-century Jeronimo’s Monastery (UNESCO); the Monument to the Discoveries, honouring intrepid Portuguese explores and their patrons, and the impressive Belem Tower (UNESCO). Visit an old patisserie that has managed to hold on to the secret recipe of Portugal’s finest pastry for over 100 years and enjoy a demonstration and tasting of the famous ‘pastéis de Belem’. Its unique narrow streets, lined with whitewashed chapels and white houses edged in blue, are the perfect place for thoughtful wandering. Continue to the town of Sintra, a UNESCO site and the favourite summer residence of Portuguese kings for six centuries. Here, peruse specialty shops filled with Portuguese handicrafts. Meals : Breakfast Day 3 : Lisbon – Óbidos – Fátima – Braga Following breakfast, your day on Portugal’s “Silver Coast” begins in the medieval walled town of Óbidos village – surrounded by medieval walls and by its whitewashed houses. Don’t forget to drink Ginja. It is a Portuguese liqueur made by infusing ginja berries, and it’s the second most popular alcoholic drink in Portugal after the Port wine. This tour also features the imposing sanctuary of Fátima, a centre of Catholic faith and destination for pilgrims from across the world. Lunch is not included. Overnight in Braga. Meals : Breakfast, Dinner Day 4 : Braga and Guimarães After breakfast, enjoy a guided tour in the city of Braga, known as the “Portuguese Rome”, for its concentration of religious architecture, as the oldest Cathedral of the country. Founded in Roman times, with the name of Bracara Augusta, this city has over 2000 years of history. In the afternoon, visit Guimarães. A historic town, exceptionally well-preserved and an authentic example of the evolution of a medieval settlement into a modern town. Lunch is not included. Overnight in Braga. Meals : Breakfast, Dinner Day 5 : Porto Following breakfast, start your tour in Porto which was elected Best European Destination 2012. Porto is history, architecture, culture, gastronomy, trade, encounters and discoveries. Visit to the city’s historical center of world heritage and monuments of Porto, Torre dos Clérigos, Livraria Lello e Irmão, Avenida dos Aliados, Estação de S. Bento, Ponte Luís I, Sé Catedral (optional: entrance in museum), Bairro da Sé and Ribeira. In the afternoon, enjoy a Port wine tasting (cellar). Overnight in Braga. Meals : Breakfast, Dinner Day 6 : Douro Valley (Hike) After breakfast, head to Douro wine region which is one of the most impressive scenery in the world. For generations, thousands of men have built extraordinary terraces staircases on steep mountains, turning almost inaccessible lands in large areas of cultivation of the famous Port Wine.
